I. JOB SUMMARY/RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Provides assistance to the physicians, registered nurse and licensed practical nurse in performing selected nursing procedures and tasks.

• Functions as an active member of the nursing team in providing quality nursing care for psychiatric patients.

II. TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

• Essential: horizontal lift/carry up to ½ pounds, seeing, hearing, talking, grasping.

• Continuous: forward reaching.

• Frequent: pushing/pulling up to 30 pounds, horizontal lift/carry up to 10 pounds, sitting, standing, walking, bending, stooping, crouching, overhead reaching, twisting, handling, fingering, squatting.

• Occasional: pushing/pulling up to maximum 50 pounds of force, lifting, horizontal lift/carry up to maximum 50 pound, floor to waist up to 35 pounds, waist to shoulder up to 25 pounds, overhead level up to 15 pounds, carrying up to 35 pounds, running, climbing, side bending, kneeling.

• Operates various machines, tools and work aids.

III. TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

• Inside work.

• Exposure to body fluids, blood products, and communicable diseases.

• Work environment may be highly stressful, fast paced and hectic.

• Occasionally accompanies patients outdoors.

• Manages confused/disoriented and combative patients and may perform tasks which compromise physical safety. Noise level fluctuates from normal conversational level to frequent yelling/screaming.

IV. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

A. EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION AND LICENSURE:

• Ability to communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing.

• Academic background in general science, psychology, sociology and other courses which demonstrate ability to understand human behavior.

• Current certification in BLS/HCP.

B. EXPERIENCE:

• One (1) year of patient care experience in an acute care facility, preferably on a psychiatric unit, or comparable education and experience.
